Precinct 8 initiated its canine program in June 2012 following a generous donation from K9s4Cops, a local organization that provides trained police dogs to agencies who would otherwise not be able to afford the costs. Upon being awarded a grant, our agency was able to obtain our first K9. Today, the team consists of 3 highly trained canines that are certified in unique K9 disciplines.
Storm, a Belgian Malinois born on 01/12/2011, comes from a great blood line. His grandfather was a Dutch National Champion and he "speaks" Dutch but zero English. Storm is highly trained and is proficient in narcotics detection. He is a great asset to Precinct 8 and to surrounding agencies when the need for a dog of his expertise is needed. Deputy Billy Williams was selected to be Storm's handler and both hit the streets in October 2012 following several weeks of intense training and certification.
In 2015, Precinct 8 was once again selected by K9s4Cops to receive a grant for an additional K9. As a result, K9 "Evo" was selected by Precinct 8 from AMK9 in Anniston, Alabama. Evo is a Belgian Malinois born on 11/2/2012 in Holland. He is certified in Obedience, Article Search, Area Search, Tracking, Building Search, Aggression Control and Narcotics Detection. Evo began patrolling the streets of Precinct 8 in March 2015 and is currently paired with his handler, Deputy Troy Brinkley.
In 2017, K9 "Rocco" was added to the Precinct 8 K9 team. Rocco was also granted to us by K9s4Cops and is dually trained in Patrol/Tracking and Explosives detection. In 2013, Rocco was crowned the K9s4Cops "Fast Dog" Champion at the Texas K9 Officers Conference and Trials. He posted a sprint speed of 31 mph! Deputy Thomas Hays was selected to be Rocco's handler and the two of them underwent 9 weeks of specialized handler training before hitting the streets.
We would like to thank K9s4Cops for making this program a reality for our Department. To find out more about the work they are doing, please visit their website at k9s4cops.org.
