The Precinct 8 Investigations Division is responsible for conducting investigative work in support of all other divisions within the agency. Many cases initiated within our various divisions necessitate additional follow-up investigation of some kind. Examples of this include property crimes, assaults, robberies, missing persons and even fatality traffic accident cases. To aid in the investigative work, Precinct 8 utilizes Detectives who supplement the original case work. The duties of the Detectives include taking statements, obtaining video evidence, collecting physical evidence, locating witnesses and other essential case work depending on the circumstances. The work of Detectives involves studying the facts of a case until a conclusion can be made or until evidence prevents them from going further. Precinct 8 often collaborates and shares information with surrounding law enforcement agencies to compare similar crimes in hopes of linking or solving cases.
The Precinct 8 Street Crimes Unit (SCU) also falls under the direction of the Investigations Division. This specialized unit was formed in 2024 to bring focused law enforcement attention to areas in the precinct that have been identified as high crime areas or areas where an increase in criminal activity has been occurring. Utilizing advanced technology and tools, the Deputies assigned to the SCU often work in an undercover capacity to surveil criminal “hot spots” and collect sufficient evidence to file criminal cases.
In 2022, Harris County formed the Violent Persons Task Force (VIPER).This multi-agency task force, made up of Deputies from various Harris County law enforcement agencies, seeks to address the backlog in outstanding warrants and reduce extradition costs through accelerated execution of warrants related to the most violent offenses. Outstanding warrants for offenders accused of aggravated offenses and murder are prioritized. Precinct 8 currently has a Detective from our Investigations Division assigned to this vital effort. Working in teams, VIPER has been highly successful at bringing wanted persons to justice throughout Harris County since its inception.
The Precinct 8 Investigations Division is under the supervision of Lieutenant Chris Yetter.
